History of Roy Frerichs
The American Legion Post 202 was named for Melvin Leroy Frerichs, Co A 316th Engineers, 9st Division. Frerichs, known to townspeople as "Roy", was born and raised in Byron. He was the first casualty from the Bentwood area in WWI. Roy Frerichs died October 6th, 1918.
Roy attended Byron School and graduated form Liberty High School. He was very involved in Athletics and was engaged to Zelma Dainty when he left for
WWI.
He owned one of the first cutown sports cars in the area, with a motorcycle engine in it. He also rode a motorcycle through the dusty back roads of East
County. Roy's father, JL Frerichs came to Byron in 1898 and established a saloon on Main Street, where the Byron Post Office was in later years and where Marge's Mini Mall is today. He was an avid baseball fan and fully upported all athletics in the Byron area.
His saloon became Byron's baseball headquarters. Teams met there after practice or playing a game. He sponsored teams and was instrumental in obtaining and maintaining playing fields.
Mr. Frerichs was recognized as an all around sportsman. He loved hunting and fishing . He was an automobile enthusiast. Frerich owned a fine Chalmer in 1913 and was one of the first people in Byron to own an Automobile.
American Legion Meeting
The American Legion meets the second Wednesday of every month. The meeting starts at 6:30 pm. The executive board meets every Monday at 5 pm in the down stairs basement. All members are encouraged to attend.
